Liquor store keeps pump running longer

A Chem Resist Group product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 23, 2006

Liquor held in pump chamber even after the inlet pipe-work has been emptied provides cooling to the rotating parts and lets pump run without liquor on the inlet for prolonged periods.

Available in polypropylene or ETFE, the Chem Free GV From Chem Resist provides a long term dry running capability and corrosion resistance.

A typical magnetically coupled plastic pump can run dry for a short period, say one to two minutes, without too much risk of damage.

The reason for this is that the pumped liquid also acts as a coolant transferring heat away from the rotating parts such as the bearing and shaft.

In a normal magnetically coupled thermoplastic pump, when this inlet liquor is unavailable, the rotating parts or the pump will heat up and melt the surrounding plastic body of the pump.

Damage can also be caused by operators putting cold liquor back into the pump while it is in this heated state, causing thermal shock that can shatter shafts and damage bushings.

The self priming Chem Free GV overcomes this problem by a volume of liquor held in the pump chamber even after the inlet pipe-work has been emptied.

This liquor constantly provides cooling to the rotating parts and allows the pump to run without liquor on the inlet for prolonged periods.

The exact period of time can be calculated by the time it takes for the liquor to rise in temperature so as to evaporate.

Typical temperature rise would be about one degree per minute for a water-like liquid.

As well as this protection against the effects of dry running, the self priming pump can prime 5m in under two minutes.
