Fume scrubbers clean up gas supplies

A Chem Resist Group product story

Turbulent contact absorption fume scrubbers handle gas flows from 600 to 80,000m3/h in a single unit.

Chem Resist's specialisation in the design and manufacture of thermoplastic plant for the process industries includes a range of turbulent contact absorption (TCA) fume scrubber units handling gas flows from 600 to 80,000m3/h in a single unit.

When specifying gas-cleaning equipment it is necessary to consider capital availability, the space available, mass transfer rates and the required flexibility of the operation.

In TCA scrubbing systems hollow plastic spheres are fluidised by the ascending gas stream as it passes counter-current to the descending scrubbing liquid.

The liquid hold-up and turbulence created within the bed dramatically reduces both the gas and liquid side resistance to mass transfer and perfect conditions for blockage free solids removal are created.

TCA scrubbing systems require less capital investment per cubic metre of gas than packed bed columns and can treat gases containing particulate matter without the risk of blockage.

The turbulent contact absorber operates at higher gas and liquid flow rates which facilitates smaller dimensions for a given treatment capacity.

There is practically no channelling or bypassing and the pressure drop is quasi-constant over a large range of gas flow rates because the bed expands.

Overall mass transfer rates have been reported that are as much as two orders of magnitude greater than in columns with packed beds and the mobility of the packing prevents plugging and blockages.
