Machining centres give hingemaker the
edge
The speed and flexibility of a trio of Chiron vertical machining centres are enabling IHW-UPF, a leading manufacturer of car door hinge systems, to maintain its competitive edge
The speed and flexibility of a trio of Chiron vertical machining centres are enabling IHW-UPF, a leading manufacturer of car door hinge systems, to maintain its competitive edge as business continues to boom at its Warwick site With batch volumes continuing their upwards trend, this first tier supplier to automotive giants at home and abroad recognised that any new production equipment had not only to satisfy these output requirements in the most cost-effective way, but also had to be flexible enough to adapt to future model changes

"The Chirons were the answer," according to IHW-UPF engineering manager, John Shuker, "and in terms of production capacity, especially the two twin-spindle DZ 12WM machines initially installed." With Y and Z axes travels of 300 mm by 425 mm, the DZ12 boasts spindle speeds of up to 10,500 revs/min, rapid traverses of 40 m/min, while the super-fast tool change time of 1 sec is complemented by a chip-to-chip time of 2.9 secs.
The DZ 12WMs were more recently complemented by a Chiron FZ12W, which has X, Y and Z axes travels of 550 mm by 300 mm by 425 mm, and 190 mm to 615 mm between spindle taper and table.
It has a tool change time of 0.8 sec with chip-to-chip achieved within 2.4 sec, and spindle speeds up to 20,000 revs/min from a 45 kW motor.
"It was the Chirons' overall speed of operation - and particularly the fast toolchange - that made them the machines for us," comments John Shuker.
"And with five Chiron spindles now in operation, we're more than capable of achieving our throughput target of over 2.7 million hinges in a year!".
