UPS secures UK Grid data

A Chloride Power Protection product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 15, 2008

The Chloride 80-NET UPS system chosen by UK Grid has unprecedented power conversion efficiency, up to 100% (unity), delivering considerable energy savings throughout its service life.

UK Grid has awarded Chloride an ongoing contract to provide critical power protection at its newly opened colocation data centre in Manchester.

The facility at No 1 Synergy House is a Tier II business class data centre with a current capacity for 300 racks.

It alleviates the shortage of such facilities in the North of England.

Working closely with UK Grid engineers, the Chloride project management team designed a scheme to deliver a flexible, reliable uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system, which will evolve in line with its business requirements.

The initial phase in the protection of this N+1 installation has been provided by a 500kVA generator and three advanced 100kVA 80-NET UPS for the main data hall and a main switchboard for auto generator change of the mains power.

The Chloride 80-NET UPS system chosen by UK Grid has unprecedented power conversion efficiency, up to 100% (unity), delivering considerable energy savings throughout its service life.

This represents a one third reduction on the energy losses against other manufacturers' UPS systems.

UK Grid's Synergy House data centre has its own HV supply and substation enabling it to sustain high powered racks.

Chloride UPS systems provide N+1 uninterruptible power to the racks with a 10 minute autonomy for protection against spikes and power interruption.

The backup generators are able to take the full load of the building in the event of complete mains failure.

UK Grid has also taken advantage of Chloride's industry-leading Life.net remote monitoring and diagnostics service.

Using specialised supervisory software, Life.net will keep the UPS systems under continuous surveillance and report their operational status back to Chloride's constantly manned UK service centre.

This advanced performance monitoring of the installed UPS systems and the mains supply provides real-time awareness and diagnosis of more than 100 separate operational parameters.

It is an essential requirement for maintaining high power availability, as any anomalies are immediately identified and remedial action triggered.

Life.net offers an enormous benefit to facilities managers as it means Chloride effectively takes responsibility for the health of the UPS.

Rob Garbutt at UK Grid commented: "Our engineers and the Chloride project management team have an excellent working relationship and are providing a 'state-of-the-art' critical power protection system".

"We have been impressed with Chloride's advanced products and systems expertise which will continue to be valued as our requirements increase".
