Interactive process mapping

A Cimplementation product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 25, 2001

Cimplementation launches a new business consultancy service aimed at industries which need to capture and document existing business process flows

is a specialist service not practised by other UK consultancies.

Using specialist software tools we work with your staff to capture their day-to-day activities in the form a process flow charts.

Designed to help teams of people work together smoothly and efficiently, our mapping procress can be widely used for a variety of team-based process mapping applications, including total quality management (TQM), ISO 9000 certification, and business process (re)engineering.

The process helps us to help you to map and document processes quickly and easily.

The developed flowchart clearly shows who is responsible for what part of the work, how information flows between team members, and which members need to work together to get things done.

The process produces multiple nested flowcharts to the level of detail you require.

The interactive nature of the process allows continued ratification and refinement of the documentation.

The documentation is clear and easily understood by all parties involved and form a sound base for reviews and business process re-engineering.

The interactive approach has the following advantages We involve the key players - the managers as well as the people who do the work.

Removes the need to work with large sheets of butcher paper on the walls and coloured post-it notes to map out the as-is process.

Everything that used to go on the paper is now captured in electronic form.

Produces a road map to follow.

It's very easy to introduce changes to the documentation produced.

The maps reconfigure automatically on-screen - just like a spreadsheet shows financial adjustments - so you can easily see the effects of a specific change.

Gives a benchmark to measure the new process against the old, a graphic aid to show changes as they occur and something to measure them against.

The approach we use is based upon the following steps.

Define the scope of the process to be mapped.

Identify the users involved in the process.

Split the users into groups of three or four based on rough-cut or departmental process division.

Interview the groups with our interactive Teamflow software to capture online their process descriptions.

Publish draft flowcharts for review.

Collect feedback and/or review with groups.

Revise and publish final charts.

Agree next actions.

The process can be made even more effective by the use of a data projector so that larger groups can interactively review and revise the results.

This is especially effective once the basic data has been captured and is being reviewed for completeness and accuracy.

It is also effective in defining the new processes.
