Analogue sensors claim the edge

A Contrinex UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Dec 3, 2004

A new range of high-performance low-cost analogue inductive sensors is claimed to have many advantages over digital inductive sensors.

Contrinex, the Swiss sensor specialist, has produced a new range of high-performance low-cost analogue inductive sensors that have many advantages over digital inductive sensors.

Although digital inductives are popular because they are robust and insensitive to dirt they suffer the disadvantage that with a digital output much of the data is lost.

On the other hand, an analogue output provides much more information and therefore is suitable for a far wider range of applications.

These new Contrinex analogue sensors are at the forefront of technology and have up to three times the sensing range of conventional devices.

The output signal is not linearised and this allows users to resolve the feedback positional data much more accurately.

In addition, most of the sensors in the Contrinex analogue range provide enhanced system flexibility by offering both analogue voltage as well as current signals from the same device.

Modern control systems are now able to benefit from the more accurate, detailed output that is produced by this new generation of analogue sensors.

They will suit many applications including those that need smooth, end-of-travel control such as lifts, transfer systems and cranes.

They are sufficiently accurate to measure vital run-out, concentricity and vibration checks in production equipment machinery that normally require expensive transducers.

They will also be used to replace expensive rotary encoders for translating machine position from a "snail-cam".

Similar principles can be applied to dancer-arm feedback, strip accumulation tracking, double-sheet detection, displacement measurement and many other applications.

All these sensors have short circuit protection and inverse polarity protection plus excellent temperature range compensation as standard and sizes start with the very compact M8 diameter and increase up to M30 in cable or pluggable versions.
