Open and shut case for Westinghouse control

A CKS Holdings product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Apr 23, 2003

Westinghouse commissioned CKS to design and manufacture custom workstations for the control and monitoring of the screen doors currently being installed for the Guangzhou Metro Line 2 in China.

Based in Chippenham, Wiltshire, Westinghouse Brakes (UK) designs and builds platform screen door systems for railway operators.

These screen doors provide an attractive barrier between the platform and the track, increasing safety and comfort for passengers.

Also, they shield passengers from potentially dangerous air turbulence from the track and moving trains.

CKS Holdings is a worldwide provider of HMI products which include industrial sealed keyboards, trackerballs, displays, local operator interfaces, workstations, thin clients and PCs.

Westinghouse commissioned CKS to design and manufacture custom workstations for the control and monitoring of the screen doors currently being installed for the Guangzhou Metro Line 2 in China.

Screen door systems from Westinghouse have already been installed for Copenhagen and Singapore railways, and the new system in China consists of 34 platforms with 1020 doors.

Andy Hillier, the Westinghouse Engineering Manager for Platform Screen Doors, stated: "We chose CKS industrial PCs because we needed a rugged system maintenance tool that would perform within specified space constraints.

The CKS units delivered the performance and reliability we required with the necessary sized footprint.

Also, we found the illuminated function keys extremely helpful - as was the CKS representative".

The CKS industrial computers are IP54-sealed stainless-steel enclosures with an integrated display, 50mm trackerball, custom keypad with illuminated keys and an application-specific indicator panel.

The internal PC is based around a highly integrated single board computer with a passive backplane for expansion.

The units are installed in cubicles next to the platform and they monitor the 4000 variables that occur in the operation of the electronically controlled screen doors.

The system's components and any malfunctions are displayed on the TFT LCDs and the inbuilt platform screen alarm immediately alerts the platform maintenance engineers of any fault.

"Because CKS is a total HMI provider", Andy Hillier added, "we were able to meet our customer's request for different user interface levels with industrial keyboards and trackerballs from one source".

All CKS industrial computers and displays carry an exceptional 3-year warranty.
