The Society of Automotive Engineers and Cadpo announce the release of the first three CAD certification courses and examinations.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and Cadpo announce the release of the first three CAD certification courses and examinations along with a 2005 training and examination schedule.

SAE Automotive CAD Certification is the industry's only international programme that provides the standard for developing and measuring automotive CAD skills globally.

This software neutral certification validates understanding of automotive best practices by discipline and bridges the gap between automotive theory and industry application in leading CAD programs.

Certification is currently offered in Catia and Unigraphics - the two most widely used CAD programs in the automotive industry.

As a worldwide initiative, this programme ensures quality in design resources around the globe.

A certified SAE Automotive CAD Professional is a design engineer who has mastered Automotive Essentials and one of four disciplines: styling, interior trim, structures and powertrain/chassis.

The first three released courses and their respective certification examinations cover: "Automotive essentials", which tests knowledge and skills in drafting, assemblies, tolerance management, data management, electrical systems, industrial materials/processes, sheet metal fabrication and processing; "Automotive structures", which tests knowledge and skill body in white (BIW) design, model integrity, die design and tooling on class B automotive parts: and "Automotive interior trim", which tests plastics fundamentals, packaging, automotive design regulations, smart model geometry and plastic design and tooling.

These courses and examinations were reviewed by the SAE Certification Curriculum Committee, including representatives from General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company and Delphi.

"Powertrain/chassis and styling" will be forthcoming.

SAE's main Automotive CAD Certification web page has complete course information.

In addition, the site now has the 2005 training and examination schedule for Troy, Michigan, Shanghai, China, and Bangalore, India.

Additional locations and onsite programmes are currently being planned.

The website also has links to free pre-assessments for these three courses.

Potential candidates can gauge their examination readiness.

A report is e-mailed to pre-assessment takers outlining areas to study prior to taking the certification exams.
