The sand filling system for trains and trams has been specially designed by Clyde Materials Handling to provide an extremely efficient way of loading sand to train sand boxes.
The system uses petrol pump style filler nozzles dispensing with the need for manual loading of the sand in buckets.
The sand can be loaded by non specialist staff into sand boxes ready to automatically dispense dry sand onto tracks in slippery and wet weather conditions ensuring improved traction.
The system has already been successfully installed at the Sheffield Supertram maintenance depot and Rotterdam Tram depot and more recently in now in use on the Nottingham Tram system.
Richard Sims, Joint Managing Director at Clyde Materials Handling said: "We have heard many times excuses such as 'leaves on the track' or 'wrong type of snow' causing havoc with timetables and inevitable delays and frustration for the general public.
We were able to demonstrate to Ms Winterton how Clyde's sand handling system is able to help overcome these problems in a simple, safe and efficient way".
