European Parliament adopts REACH chemical legislation.
Today's European Parliament vote on REACH (the registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals) marks a decisive step towards implementing the biggest and most complex piece of European environmental legislation ever devised.
Commenting on the political agreement, Steve Elliott, chief executive, says: "This has truly been a legislative marathon which now looks like entering into force in June 2007".
"During the past decade, industry has consistently supported the need for a workable REACH to replace the existing regulatory framework, which is insufficient to provide confidence to both industry and consumers".
"We believe that the package agreed today by the European Parliament represents the best chance for REACH to deliver on its original objective - ensuring improvements in human health and the environment whilst fostering innovation and competitiveness".
"Now a new race begins to ensure that REACH is implemented and enforced as effectively as possible".
"There are many practical issues that need to be resolved and, as industry, we are committed to playing our part with the Commission, national governments and their regulators to ensure that we deliver a REACH that gives confidence and certainty to businesses and consumers alike", Elliott concludes.
To help deliver that confidence and certainty, the CIA has already set-up REACHReady - a subsidiary company established to help companies in every sector comply with REACH.
Tens of thousands of UK firms - both big and small - will be affected by REACH and they should consider the implications for their business as a matter of urgency.
