Exide gel batteries back up wave-energy project

An Exide Technologies product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 19, 2009

Exide Technologies Network Power has supplied zero-maintenance gel batteries to the Pelamis Wave Energy Converter project, off the coast of Portugal.

The Pelamis Wave Energy Converter is a semi-submerged articulated structure composed of cylindrical sections linked by hinged joints.

Each machine is rated at 750kW and can provide sufficient power to meet the annual electricity demand of approximately 500 homes.

Exide's Sonnenschein GF12 160V batteries are used as a power back up in case the 6.6kV supply from the shore fails.

When the unit is being towed into place, the batteries monitor the angles of the hydraulic joints between each section and adjust the levels of each unit as required until the mains is connected.

Exide's gel batteries feature an electrolyte suspended in a gel, removing the danger of spilt acid.
