Control module makes motion easy

A Control Techniques product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 13, 2004

A powerful, yet easy to use, full 1.5-axis motion control module simply "clicks" into any one of the three universal option slots on the Unidrive SP solutions platform.

The versatility of Control Techniques' Unidrive SP solutions platform has been extended further with the introduction of "motion made easy" - a powerful, yet easy to use, full 1.5-axis motion control module - known as SM-EZMotion that simply "clicks" into any one of the three universal option slots on the drive.

SM-EZMotion is a cost-effective motion controller that simply plugs into the Unidrive itself - with software, thereby taking up no extra cubicle space.

With six high-speed digital I/O points, (four input, two output), as well as seven digital I/O and five analogue I/O that are standard on the Unidrive, the module, with its own internal processor, provides 1.5-axis motion, synchronised to a reference encoder (with encoder module).

The SM-EZMotion package gives users savings at every turn - the zero-space controller saves cubicle space, eliminates the need for extra cabling and reduces the chance of termination errors.

The module continues the Unidrive SP ethos of safe and easy commissioning that can be carried out reliably and safely, even by novices, and programming takes a matter of just minutes - no special training is required.

The novel package gives rapid setup, using fill-in-the-dialogue-box programming that achieves motion profiles quickly and reliably for OEMs, integrators, machine builders and end users alike.

Exclusively for use with Unidrive SP, the drive hardware solutions platform, the package comprises the SM-EZMotion module combined with the PowerTools Pro software supplied free in the box.

SM-EZMotion is seen as the ideal solution to many of the common applications for conveyor synchronisation, electronic gearing/camming, flying cutoff, registration control, labelling and printing, phase synchronisation, rotary knife, slip compensation, point-to-point position - and many more applications.

The PowerTools Pro software is a Windows-based programming software package that gives unparalleled assistance for very rapid programming for any skill level of user, from the experienced servo engineer to the infrequent user or even someone new to servo systems.

First, the "plug-and-play" implementation configures the Unidrive parameter settings, making hardware set-up almost automatic.

Data entry is as easy as completing a simple form with dialogue boxes leading the user through the process, with additional assistance from point and click clockwise/anticlockwise radio buttons, scrolling menu selections and drag and drop parameter and I/O assignments.

And this is accomplished in complete safety, without the need to remove covers or power down, simply by using the ModBus RTU port on the front of the Unidrive.

The Unidrive SP is easily matched to a wide range of motors and feedback devices to provide optimum performance for nearly any servo application.

The "motion made easy" solution provides users with all the power and precision needed for indexing, homing, gearing, queuing, synchronised motion, multiple profile summation, high-speed position capture, s-curve acceleration/deceleration, program multitasking and so on.
