Four "eyes" improve dashboard lamp
inspection
When Osram needed to improve product verification on a machine producing lamps used for the illumination of car dashboards, it replaced the existing vision system with four new In-Sight 2000 units.
Osram from Treviso, Italy, needed to verify its production output of lamps used for the illumination of car dashboards The machine producing the lamps already used a vision system, but the existing system had become outdated and could not accommodate new controls to improve the verification of the product

Cognex has announced that it has added high speed part identification software tools to In-Sight 2000 - the company's award-winning low-cost, standalone vision sensor
To solve the problem, Cognex system integrator TEC was asked to substitute the old vision system with four Cognex In-Sight 2000 vision systems.
The application of the Cognex In-Sight vision systems was critical because of the high production speed of the lamps, which allowed less than 150ms for acquiring an image, analysing it and communicating the result to the PLC.
Another important factor was the difficult positioning of the cameras and the illuminators.
Cognex vision systems perform a number of measurements in two different positions on the machine: the first station analyses the lamp when it is off - checking its dimensions, plus presence, position and shape of the filament; and the second station makes similar checks on illuminated lamps.
Each station includes two In-Sight 2000 vision systems, providing both lateral and frontal views of each lamp.
Small red backlights are used for illumination, with one for each view.
The cameras are placed side by side and a mirror is used for the frontal view.
A monitor is connected to each vision system allowing the operators to view the behaviour of the system.
The In-Sight 2000 machine vision system employs a spreadsheet user interface for configuring the vision application as well as a handheld console for easy navigation.
In-Sight offers a full library of Cognex's proven vision software tools, including PatFind, which is able to locate parts, regardless of changes in part orientation, size or appearance.
Thanks to these powerful tools, TEC has been able to meet the performance specifications asked for by the customer. Request a free brochure from Cognex UK ...
