Guangdong Tyco invests in Cognex inspection system

A Cognex UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 11, 2009

Guangdong Tyco Electronics, a manufacturer connectors and cable assemblies, has invested in a Cognex vision system to detect damaged equipment.

Based on the characteristics of the stamping part industry, Shanghai Ximing Vision Technology developed the platform, providing Guangdong Tyco with the statistical data it needs to inspect for defects.

Since the inspected parts of the products are replaced very fast and the repair is usually completed within two hours, Ximing chose the Cognex In-Sight 5100 for Guangdong Tyco.

This inspection platform is equipped with the function of automatically saving the product picture, collecting flawed product data and displaying a size and trend chart of all products on the interface.

The system uses a Zeiss Telecentric lens, which is intended to solve the large scene depth problem of stamping parts.

Now that the system has been integrated, all sizes of products can be tested in order to judge whether they lack the pin - the most common defect.

The repeatability of the system inspection is 2u, which is within the 10u quality standard required.

Cao Wuxiu, vision senior engineer of Guangdong Tyco Electronics' stamping department, said: 'In conventional quality control, the product quality is primarily monitored via random inspection; therefore, it is difficult to detect some intermittent shortages of quality.

'The 100 per cent online inspection can be realised via machine vision.

'Costs can be saved when quality is controlled and, because the machine vision can realise 100 per cent of the online inspection, product problems can be found as soon as possible and the rejection can be reduced to a minimum.'.
