Satellite radio design by worldwide collaboration

A CoCreate Software product story

Six companies from around the globe worked online in real-time to design, refine and prototype a first-of-its-kind satellite radio boom box in only six weeks using CoCreate's OneSpace Solution Suite.

The remarkable accomplishment immediately captured a prestigious design award and product attention.

Using OneSpace Solution Suite by CoCreate, the team proved how real-time collaboration can revolutionise product development workflows.

Designers and engineers from Aptec, a Florida-based product development company; Recoton Corporation, a consumer electronics manufacturer known for its Jensen's brand products; Sirius, a New York City-based satellite radio broadcast firm; Recoton's electronics manufacturing supplier in Korea; a tooling provider in China; and a rapid prototyper based in Texas, held a series of virtual, real-time collaboration sessions beginning on 7th November 2001.

The goal: to design the first portable, home-based satellite radio device.

The starting point was a hand-drawn sketch.

Six weeks later, a functional prototype was ready to show the world.

And in the first week of January, at the 2002 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the new boom box won an Editor's Choice award from Popular Mechanics magazine.

The boom box has since been featured in USA Today and shown by Sirius Satellite Radio.

"In the world of consumer electronics, product developers have no choice-we have to move at record speed.

Moving quickly is the only way we can stay abreast of enabling technology-and the only way to inspire the public's imagination", noted Tom Morris, CIO, Aptec.

"CoCreate's OneSpace Solution makes this possible.

OneSpace Solution not only lets designers compress their time schedules, but also enhances our ability to innovate.

OneSpace Solution's tools make the design process both more nimble, and more focused.

The value of this technology in today's product design environment cannot be overstated".

"Since we discovered OneSpace technology, we have completely changed the way we view our product development cycles", said Dale DiBernardo, Senior Project Manager, Recoton.

"In the consumer electronics business, its critical to move quickly as new opportunities arise.

With OneSpace, we can do that.

It gives us an incredible edge in the marketplace".

"Today, companies are looking at work from a process perspective, but they have not worked on cross-organisational change to the degree they need to", said Tilman Schad, chairman for CoCreate Software.

"This is a great example where the technology and business process were leveraged to its full capability".

OneSpace Solution Suite is an integrated collaborative product development software suite providing a web infrastructure that manages product information for dispersed teams to design, share and manage data.

Capabilities are also included for product definition, lifecycle states, release management and event notification.

OneSpace leverages its collaboration services to offer specific solutions in the areas of collaboration for projects, requirements, product information, design and the extend enterprise.

APTEC has adopted OneSpace as a standard tool for collaborative product development with all of its clients.

The production model Jensen SRB-2003 satellite boom box is expected to be available at next year's Consumer Electronics Show.

The new box will complement a soup-to-nuts menu of Recoton's Sirius-enabled mobile electronics including the Jensen SSR2000 satellite receiver system, which consists of the DLP2000 radio receiver, DCU2000 display and controller, and wiring harness.
