Besi scales up to 3D modelling
BE Semiconductor Industries (Besi), headquartered in Drunen, Netherlands, has recently expanded its investment in CoCreate products.
BE Semiconductor Industries (Besi), headquartered in Drunen, Netherlands, has recently expanded its investment in CoCreate products Besi, a leading manufacturer of semiconductor packaging, plating and die handling equipment for both lead frame and array connect applications, counts among it customers such industry giants as Agere, Amkor, ASE, AVX, Conexant, IBM, Infineon, Intel, Lucent, Micron, Motorola, NSEB, Philips and STMicroelectronics
The Besi Plating and Singulation Division (formerly Meco Equipment Engineers) in particular, relies heavily on CoCreate software.
Besi works closely with CoCreate partner, CAD Services Nederland, for its software needs.
However, that hasn't stopped competitors from trying to lure the company to use other products.
Although Besi has been a successful CoCreate 2D design customer since 1993, a 3D software company well known for its parametric-based system tried aggressively to sell its 3D product to Besi at one time, but quickly acknowledged defeat when its history-based product couldn't come close to matching the designing speed of OneSpace Designer Drafting.
"In the beginning, we were open to the well-known parametric system, but we certainly found no advantage in using it", said Ronald Langereis, Manager of Besi's Engineering and Development Plating Division.
"History-based systems typically cannot deal with large assemblies and greatly restrict design freedom.
They are very difficult to learn and basically eliminate the possibility of more than one designer working on a model".
Eventually Besi did opt to move to 3D CAD, but with stringent stipulations.
Working closely with CAD Services, Besi insisted that the 3D system be as easy to use as the CoCreate 2D system, support freedom of design, and allow engineers to leverage data across the design team, including 2D.
The parametric-based system was again benchmarked against CoCreate and was again rejected when compared with the CoCreate solution, OneSpace Designer Modeling.
"It is very easy to learn to use and to re-use existing data for new designs", said Langereis.
"I calculate our expenditures very carefully and, based on our ROI, have always been able to easily justify our continued expansion with CoCreate.
It has been a cycle.
The more OneSpace Designer Modeling seats we had in place, the faster our business grew and the more seats we could add".
Langereis provided numbers to back up his claims.
"Designing with 3D has boosted innovation during all our projects", he said.
"Development time has been reduced an incredible 40% over our already optimised 2D system.
And thanks to the 3D perspective, we can build our machines 30% smaller than before, which is a powerful selling point for us and further strengthens Meco's popularity internationally".
"Our models are right the first time - before prototyping and production even begin", Langereis said.
"This is a tremendous cost savings in itself.
We also find it most advantageous that we can re-use data imported from other CAD systems.
We leverage the work and knowhow of our suppliers and customers - more savings still".
Designer Modeling provided automatic standardisation of parts and sub-assemblies providing more significant savings, of both time and money.
In addition, CAD Services provided Besi with its best practices solution so that a major project involving standardisation of over 200,000 parts succeeded.
The impressive Besi Model Manager database now contains 10 years of up-to-date engineering documentation allowing for the use of CoCreate's Annotation and for platform-independent concurrent engineering.
Besi is very pleased with the professional support and advice it has consistently received from CAD Services.
Besi recently ordered more OneSpace Designer Modeling licences - showing that the company is still growing and saving with CoCreate products.
