Gebruder Trox replaces 2D design environment with 3D modelling software following successful time-critical pilot project.

Gebruder Trox has replaced its 2D design environment with Cocreate's Onespace Designer Modeling 3D software.

The decision followed a time-critical pilot project.

Cocreate distributor Ascad is responsible for implementation, consulting and deployment of the enterprise-wide project, which includes 12 Designer Modeling and nine Sheet Metal licences.

Further investments are planned.

For more than 50 years, Trox has been producing and selling ventilation and air conditioning products and systems.

In addition to headquarters near Dusseldorf and modern production sites in Germany, Trox has manufacturing facilities around the world.

"Reducing errors in production was one of the reasons we switched to a 3D environment," said Kai Seegert, CAD Manager at Trox.

"For example, 2D data going to China for production required tremendous effort and time spent on communication until the part finally met our requirements".

"At the same time, deadline pressure continued to escalate in customisation and project business, forcing us to react even faster in construction".

The dynamic modelling methodology and the fact that it was easy to learn and use were factors in the decision.

Also of importance to the sheet metal processing company was the Sheet Metal module, which carried the process through to production.

The first pilot project was the complete decentralised ventilation system for the new Capricorn building, part of the main entrance to the Dusseldorf Media Port.

"Using a new development environment is quite risky when you have fixed deadlines combined with non-compliance penalties, but we were confident that Onespace Designer Modeling was the right choice," said Seegert.

"Completing the first phase of the Capricorn project on schedule confirmed it for us".

Company-wide implementation of the software ran parallel to the pilot project.

Based on the results, Trox expects an immediate 30% reduction in development time.

At the same time, the number of prototypes will be reduced on average by 30%.

3D data based on the first designs with the software have already been transferred to external production partners in the USA and China.

The design phase for customised products has already been cut by 50%.

Plus, company-wide use of the Webaccess 3D viewer will reduce communication efforts and rework normally required for production.
