3D environment enables flexible machine design

A CoCreate Software product story

One of the world's leading suppliers of labelling machines, Altech, has standardised on CoCreate products.

One of the world's leading suppliers of labelling machines, Altech, has standardised on CoCreate products.

Altech is based in Bareggio near Milan.

The company designs and manufactures machines to produce self-adhesive labels for customers throughout the world.

"We work in a highly competitive sector where using state-of-the-art technology is key to success", says Roberto Berrettini, Technical Manager at Altech, Italy.

"That's why we moved to a fast, flexible 3D environment".

Altech investigated various parametric software solutions but found them inadequate.

Parametric software is the architecture commonly used for most 3D CAD systems.

"It's the traditional CAD model of working, but it won't work when engineers need to move fast", says Berrettini.

"Late changes prove especially difficult with these tools".

"Engineers have to consider any change in the history tree and its constraints, which makes changes time consuming and, in some cases, even impossible".

After thorough investigation, Altech chose CoCreate's 3D CAD solution with its history-free (non parametric) technology.

"With Designer Modeling we concentrate on the model and freely design, rather than having to focus on how best to plan the design in case of unanticipated changes", says Berrettini.

Along with 3D modelling, the company also adopted CoCreate's data management solution.

The company can now load and store 3D designs and associated 2D drawings, use revision and state control, find all the different places a design is used in the company, and search the company's considerable database to find designs in seconds.

All of Altech's new 3D CAD data are created in projects and are then managed with CoCreate's data management solution.

Design and production departments draw data from one central data vault.

"This way, we can all work with the same data concurrently, saving time and costs", says Berrettini.

"Plus, leveraging existing components and designs in new projects will drive down overall costs, improve delivery times and increase quality".

Berrettini likes the data management solution so much, he strongly recommends that any manufacturing company, no matter the size, consider the data management tool.

Using Designer Modeling and integrating design data into CoCreate's data management solution are two vital steps toward what CoCreate calls lean product development.

Lean product development calls for technology that blends easily with existing production tools, and also brings significantly less complexity and more value to design processes.

Altech works with CoCreate reseller, Next Technologies, in building and supporting its product development environment.
