Cooper Lighting and Security has opened a new EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) test facility at its central battery systems division, thereby reducing test lead times and eliminating the need to use external EMC test houses.

Located at Swillington on the outskirts of Leeds, the new facility is designed to complement the range of test equipment already in place at the company's main Doncaster site.

The Swillington facility includes a state-of-the-art anechoic chamber for measuring products' radiated emissions, as well as equipment to measure fast transients, conducted emissions, ESD (electrostatic discharge), mains fluctuation and RF radiation immunity.

These comprehensive capabilities mean that Cooper Lighting and Security can now carry out in-house EMC testing of all the products manufactured by its Crompton Lighting and Menvier-JSB divisions, thereby speeding up the CE marking process and ensuring compliance with regulations such as IEC 801, IEC 802 and EN54 Parts 2 and 4.

According to Dr Fariz Khellaf, technical manager of Cooper Lighting and Security, in-house testing will also help to reduce product development times.

"With the new EMC facility, we can quickly and easily test a product in the early stages of development, and this avoids the need to make expensive and time-consuming design changes later on," he said.

In addition, the new facility will be particularly useful for in-house EMC testing of emergency converted luminaires as part of ICEL 1004 compliance, as well as enabling the company to carry out CE marking of non-standard products without delay.
