Coventry University graduate Steven Cardew has been awarded first prize in the IMechE Queen's Silver Jubilee Competition 2002.

Cardew, originally from Cornwall, graduated from the University's Aerospace Systems Engineering course in November this year.

Cardew was one of 12 regional finalists who competed in the event on 10th December 2002 at IMechE headquarters in Birdcage Walk, London.

He beat off competition from Trinity College Dublin, University of Surrey, Nottingham Trent University and Edinburgh University with his final-year project presentation on a primary flight control rig.

Cardew successfully scooped first prize, a cash award of GBP 800, which added to the GBP 125 he won in the Midlands heat of the competition.

Cardew said: "I am, of course delighted to have won the QSJC final.

Especially having competed amongst some talented and very worthy presenters.

It was a very enjoyable day, and an excellent learning experience.

I would highly recommend the competition to anyone considering entering".

Cardew presented his project in front of a panel of senior engineers, who concentrated on presentation skills, more than the technical content of the project.

The aim of the competition is to promote the development of engineering student's ability to communicate effectively, while instilling the importance of communication in a career in engineering.

The competition, targeted at students taking an ImechE accredited course, receives a very high standard of entries.

Cardew is now working for BAe Systems at Prestwick, as a Hydraulics Systems Engineer on the Nimrod project.
