Coventry University engineering student Ryan Struggles has been awarded the Corus Scholarship 2002 for his "exceptional performance" during his placement year with automotive supplier Corus.

Coventry University engineering student Ryan Struggles has been awarded the Corus Scholarship 2002 for his "exceptional performance" during his placement year with automotive supplier Corus Professor Jon King, Director of Corus Automotive, visited the university to award Struggles with his certificate and cash prize on 13th March 2003

Final-year automotive engineering design student Struggles from Shropshire, was delighted to be offered the award, but even more pleased that Corus has offered him a conditional place on its graduate training programme on completion of his degree.

"It was great to win the scholarship because I exceeded everyone's expectations.

During my time with Corus Automotive they asked me to complete a project which would test my capabilities.

I proved to them, and myself that I could do it and that felt great; winning the award is the icing on the cake", said Struggles.

Professor Jon King, Director of Corus Automotive said: "Maintaining the link between the university and industry is vital.

Students who take a sandwich course and complete a placement year are much better equipped to "hit the ground running" and that's exactly what we're looking for as an employer.

Ryan's achievement proves that matching a great university, a talented and hard-working student, and a company, like Corus, which welcomes student placements can produce terrific results, and proves the system works".

Professor Ashraf Jawaid, Dean of Coventry University's School of Engineering said: "This award is testament to the excellent links we have built between the university and industry.

Each year over 100 engineering students are placed within some of the most successful firms in the UK.

Certain experience is essential to become a successful engineer.

We at Coventry University are very proud of our industrial links and recognise the benefit of this for our students".
