Jargon buster cuts through the ATEX jungle
ABB has published an "ATEX jargon buster" that helps motor users cut through the jungle of terms and definitions that make up the new ATEX Directives.
On completion of his history of art degree, Charles Morgan decided to follow a career in film and television rather than going to work in the world-renowned family business of Morgan Motor Cars.
After eight years working with ITN, Morgan and four others set up their own company making television news and documentary programmes.
He worked with many famous names including Sandy Gall, Reginald Bosenquet and Alistair Burnett and filmed in locations all over the world.
But Charles Morgan's heart lay in cars and he joined the family company in 1986.
Morgan is the oldest car company anywhere in the world still controlled by the family which established it and Morgan wanted to uphold that tradition.
At that time, each car took nine weeks to make, each section was hand-built, and hand-painted, and there wasn't a computer in sight.
The cars were in heavy demand and the waiting list was seven years and growing.
Morgan knew this wasn't good business and something needed to change.
Morgan decided to study a Diploma in Manufacturing Management at Coventry University.
He enjoyed the course and learning new skills and decided to top-up the diploma to an MBA.
He implemented his newly found knowledge and skills at the Morgan factory - streamlining work processes, multiskilling the workforce, encouraging team-building and bringing in new technology while maintaining the traditional methods and values.
Since Morgan's programme of improvements was introduced the company has gone from strength to strength.
The cars still retain their unique wooden frame and rigorous attention to detail and each customer is brought to the factory to see their purchase in the making by the actual craftsmen on the job.
The company won the Autocar Award for "Specialist Manufacturer of 2000".
On hearing about his honorary degree, Morgan commented: "It was a great surprise and although I'm not sure if I deserve it I take huge pleasure in accepting the honour".
