Compressor redesign boosts performance

A CompAir UK product story

L-series fixed-speed comressors deliver up to 15% more air for the same power input than previous models, while the variable speed version offers even greater energy-savings.

CompAir has redesigned its L-series 90 to 132kW oil-injected screw compressors, reducing the overall cost of ownership while delivering the highest air outputs.

Jeremy Sykes, Managing Director of CompAir UK and Ireland said: "Energy usage, operational performance, parts inventory and maintenance demands all impact on the total cost of ownership of a compressor".

"With our existing L-series range we had well-proven design principles so the objective was to develop these to raise the overall benchmark".

"What we have achieved with the re-design is a range of gear driven compressors that is better in every way: increased air output, reduced parts and maintenance requirements and higher environmental credentials".

"The additional bonus is that we have packaged all of this into a smaller frame, substantially reducing the compressor footprint".

With power consumption of a compressor being up to 80% of the lifetime cost, energy efficiency was a primary requirement.

The new fixed-speed models deliver up to 15% more air for the same power input than previous models, while the L132kW Speed Regulated (SR) variable speed version offers even greater energy-savings.

The SR energy savings are achieved by an innovative motor design that offers better performance and long-term reliability than alternative inverter style variable speed drives.

On a typical 132kW installation operating two shifts, this can mean energy savings of GBP11,000 compared to a fixed speed approach.

As well as redesigning key components, CompAir has reduced the overall component content of the L-series compressors by 20%.

The Alpha air end EK230 has an integrated oil filter and thermostatic valve.

Its redesign reduces the number of tubes and hoses that require routine replacement.

The low-speed air-end, radial fan and a noise damper at the cooling air inlet also ensure quiet running, with noise levels starting from 73dB(A) on the L90 model, enabling the machines to be installed in areas without the need for ear protection.

All the doors are fully removable and major components are arranged to allow easy access for routine servicing, which contributes to reduced machine downtime.

The 3.2m2 footprint means that the new design needs almost a third less floor space than comparable models.

By paying attention to air circulation within the unit, CompAir has ensured that the machine runs cool, which contributes to prolonged compressor life.

Heavy-duty intake filters mean that only high-quality air enters the air end.

The L-series compressors carry CompAir's Assure free extended warranty scheme, which covers 44,000 hours of operation.
