Chains delivered to order for storage systems

A Cross + Morse product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 25, 2001

Space-saving vertical storage systems manufacturer Calam orders no fewer than 500 types of special chain as it is needed from Cross and Morse, and is guaranteed delivery within two weeks

Fast deliveries and competitive pricing on custom roller chain from Cross and Morse are a vital ingredient in the success of space-saving vertical storage systems manufactured by Calam.

To cover the full range of models and options, no fewer than 500 types of special chain are needed, and it would clearly be impossible for Calam to hold all types in stock.

Instead, the company orders chain as it is needed from Cross and Morse, and is guaranteed delivery within two weeks.

Calam vertical storage systems essentially comprise steel shelves which are mounted on chains running over motor-driven sprockets.

When items are required from a particular shelf, the sprockets turn until the shelf is at a convenient height for operator access.

Reliable and accurately manufactured chain is essential for correct operation, and a large number of different chain types is needed to allow the systems to be customised to match the end user's specification.

Presented with these requirements, Cross and Morse's design team developed not only a range of custom chains for Calam, but also the special-purpose tooling required for the precision manufacture of the chain in 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2" and 2" BS pitches.

When an order is received, Cross and Morse's computerised manufacturing system fast-tracks it through the company's UK manufacturing plant, ensuring that the two-week delivery deadline is met.

Since Cross and Morse chains are produced to very close tolerances, matched strands of virtually any length can be manufactured as needed and, during manufacture, the shelf support pins can be incorporated at any required pitch multiple.

The upper and lower sprockets used to support and drive the chain in the Calam storage systems, together with the primary drive pinions and shafts, are also supplied by Cross and Morse to ensure optimum performance.

The custom design and manufacturing services which Cross and Morse provides have contributed significantly to the success of Calam over many years.

Indeed, Cross and Morse products have now been in use on Calam storage systems for over a decade and, it is a remarkable tribute to their quality and reliability that, during this period, not a single chain or sprocket failure has occurred.

Cross and Morse is one of the UK's leading and most experienced manufacturers of power transmission products.

The company is dedicated not only to developing and supplying products which accurately match the requirements of today's market, but also to providing unrivalled service and support for its customers.

Cross and Morse was successfully assessed by Lloyds in 1992, and is now registered as an approved manufacturer to ISO 9002:1994.
