TVS diode protection protects relays as
standard
In order to ensure that its range of Solid State Relays are protected from over voltage, Crydom International Ltd has introduced TVS diode protection on its range of SSR products.

Other than the extra cost and difficulties with fittings, the major draw back with MOV's is that they only offer finite protection and will require changing.
If the MOV is fitted internally, a high energy transient can end the useful life of the SSR.
TVS diodes are an alternative non-degrading method of voltage protection, and hence improve the life span of SSR's compared to those with internal MOV's.
Essentially, Crydom is aiming to extend the life of an already hardy product.
This option is not suitable for capacitive loads, but provides generally provides protection in most other applications.
In response to customer requests, Crydom has also included an LED status indication with their TVS diode protected range.
This function allows users to see at a glance whether the SSR is functioning; a green LED displays when power is present at the input.
Both options will be available through catalogue suppliers RS Components and Farnell Components by April.
Those products with the over voltage protection can be identified with the letter "P" in the catalogue.
Those with the LED option will be identified with the letter "G", although this will automatically be supplied if the TVS diode option is selected.
