Cost Engineering short course a success

A Cranfield University product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 25, 2000

The first of a series of Short Courses on Cost Engineering was recently offered by Cranfield University and attended by Cost Engineers and Estimators from Ford, the MoD and Rolls-Royce

Cranfield University is one of the UK's leading players in research and education with a recognised reputation for engineering.

Previously in the UK, there has been no formal educational programme dedicated to the complex area of 'cost engineering'.

Consequently, Cost Engineering lacks recognition within the manufacturing industry and in academic circles.

The role of the Cost Engineer is to estimate and forecast the cost of a product from conception, through development to final manufacture.

Companies using Cost Engineering recognise the need to improve the profile of the profession both within industry and externally.

As a response to industrial requirements for more formal education in this field, the first of a series of Short Courses on 'Cost Engineering' was recently offered by Cranfield University, and hosted by Ford Motor Company.

The course is a result of close collaboration between the two organisations and is a part of an Industrial Masters research programme with Ford.

The course was held during 24-28th July at Trafford House, Basildon, and was attended by Cost Engineers and Cost Estimators from Ford, The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and from Rolls Royce.

The course covered best practices for the automotive, aerospace and defence industries.

Looking also at tools and techniques for cost estimating, software, the effect of environmental legislation, the changing supply chain environment and benchmarking.

The cost impact of environmental legislation was of particular interest for many of the participants.

The course also provided an insight into new challenges for industry and its implications on cost.

The information exchange on Cost Estimating practices between the differing industries was greatly valued by all participants.
