Cranfield University has been awarded a grant worth almost GBP 10 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council for its Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre.

Cranfield University has been awarded a grant worth almost GBP 10 million from the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) for its Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (IMRC), one of 16 specialist centres in the UK.

The five-year grant renews a previous grant from the EPSRC and enables the centre to continue its innovative leading-edge research in this sector.

The award exemplifies the quality of research carried out within the Centre and demonstrates the vision and ability of the Cranfield IMRC to be "world class" in all areas of manufacturing research.

The unique combination of manufacturing research skills and resources enables the centre to achieve its goals in addressing key aspects of the UK's future manufacturing needs.

Centre Director, Professor Dave Stephenson says: "The renewal of this grant further highlights our commitment to high quality integrated research within the manufacturing arena, and demonstrates a commitment to the potential of the manufacturing sector as part of a sustainable EU economy".

Grants are awarded for five year periods allowing researchers to pursue specific project areas and respond to industry needs, without the need to repeatedly complete yearly project applications.

The Cranfield IMRC was founded in 2002 to create a centre of excellence at the University, drawing together the vast experience of expertise in manufacturing related research across the university's three campuses.

The IMRC conducts high quality integrated research, identifying and exploiting emerging research ideas, as well as encouraging an element of "blue-sky" research.
