Appointments expand manufacturing expertise

The appointment of four new team members reinforces Cranfield's leading position in the manufacturing sector and demonstrates the university's dedication to global manufacturing and innovation.

Cranfield University is strengthening its expertise in manufacturing.

The appointment of four new members of the team reinforces Cranfield's leading position in the sector and demonstrates the university's dedication to global manufacturing and innovation, and its commitment to developing tomorrow's manufacturing leaders through its renowned manufacturing postgraduate programmes.

Professor John Kay, Head of Manufacturing at Cranfield University, said: "UK manufacturing has great potential, but a concerted effort is required to transform it from a resource intensive to a knowledge intensive innovative sector capable of achieving and maintaining technological and production leadership in the global market place".

"Cranfield is now developing its already strong position in this sector by employing a number of new staff to build on our existing expertise, in knowledge management, innovation, modelling and optimisation".

"Although the concentration is on UK based companies, we continue to work with global enterprises on research and specific staff development issues".

Dr Ahmed Al-Ashaab joins the team as Lecturer in Manufacturing from the University of Wolverhampton.

Dr Al-Ashaab has a background in knowledge and design management and has spent several years in Monterrey at Mexico's leading manufacturing institute.

Dr Peter Ball joins the Manufacturing team as Senior Lecturer from Strathclyde University.

His background is in modelling and manufacturing system design.

Dr Jorn Mehnen also joins the team as Senior Lecturer.

Mehnen was previously based at the University of Dortmund, Germany and specialises in the use of optimisation techniques, in particular associated with manufactured products.

Dr Palie Smart joined the team in December from Cranfield School of Management.

She has a social science background and specialises in the management of innovation.

Cranfield University is home to one of 16 Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (IMRC), founded in 2002 with funding of GBP 7.85 million by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) to support a five year programme of research and manufacturing excellence.

Drawing together academic research staff from across three schools within the university, the IMRC has also recently been awarded a second grant worth almost GBP 10 million to continue its innovative leading - edge research in this sector.
