The largest ever load bank produced by British resistor specialist Cressall - able to handle up to 84MW - has been supplied to Rolls-Royce for testing gas turbines

The largest ever load bank produced by British resistor specialist Cressall has been supplied to Rolls-Royce for testing gas turbines.

Able to handle up to 84 MW, the 60-metre long installation is used at the company's turbine development and maintenance facility in Montreal, Canada.

Cooled entirely by convection currents rather than fans, Cressall's load bank is near-silent in use, an important consideration due to the suburban location of the test facility.

Constructed from 42 resistor modules, the load bank has a contract value of Can$2.1m (around ?920,000).

The design is suitable for turbine outputs of both 13.8 kV at 60 Hz and 11kV at 50 Hz, allowing turbines for markets outside North America to be developed and tested alongside domestic products.

As well as protecting the nearby residential area from intrusive noise, the use of convection cooling instead of fans means that there are no motors to freeze up during the harsh Canadian winter.

January temperatures in Montreal can fall as low as minus 25C; Cressall's unit is designed to operate at a minimum temperature of minus 50C.

Installed as pairs mounted one above the other, the individual resistor modules have been designed with distinctive sloping "roofs".

These allow the free passage of warm air away from the lower modules, while preventing heavy accumulations of snow on the upper modules which could affect their performance.
