A major investment in production facilities will allow power resistor specialist Cressall to cut delivery times for its neutral earthing resistors (NERs).

A major investment in production facilities will allow power resistor specialist Cressall to cut delivery times for its neutral earthing resistors (NERs).

As well as a faster turnaround, the company now offers a wider range of construction materials, and can manufacture NERs for precisely specified duties within extremely fine electrical and mechanical tolerances.

NERs are used in AC distribution networks to prevent plant damage caused by earth faults.

In the event of a fault, the resistor limits the current flowing through the neutral point of a transformer or generator to a safe level.

Resistance values are determined at the production stage and remain constant throughout the life of the unit.

In contrast to liquid resistors, Cressall NERs are virtually unaffected by fluctuations in ambient temperature, making them ideal for installation in exposed locations.

In addition, unlike earthing reactors, NERs do not induce phase changes and resonances in the fault current.

With no need for on-site calibration or auxiliary power supplies, Cressall units are simple to install.

The company's new production capability will allow some reductions in the physical sizes of units, further simplifying the installation process.

Once installed, an NER requires no maintenance other than periodic inspection and cleaning.

Rapid cooling characteristics ensure that, even if several earth faults occur in a short space of time, the resistor will be able to dissipate the current safely.
