Brake adds safety to linear actuators

A Copley Controls product story

The ServoTube brake is a new cost-effective solution for controlled deceleration and parking of vertical axes during power-down and power fail conditions.

Copley Controls has introduced the ServoTube brake, a new cost-effective solution for controlled deceleration and parking of vertical axes during power-down and power fail conditions.

The highly compact IP67 rated brake provides a holding force of 200N, securely supporting the ServoTube 25 when a machine or production line is powered down.

The ServoTube is particularly suited to use with Copley Controls' own Xenus CANOpen drive.

The brake becomes operational when the drive's dedicated normally open brake contacts become closed.

Because the normally open contacts are solenoid operated, the brake can be operated as part of a programmed parking operation or as an automatically engaged fail safe in the event of power failure.

A clever unlocking mechanism is used by the new brake that eliminates the problems that are often experienced with brakes jamming or even damaging the rod.

Downtime introduced by jamming brakes, not to mention replacing parts is a serious and often neglected issue.

The manufacturer describes its solution to this problem as a "unidirectional self-jamming" mechanism, meaning that the linear actuator unjams itself.

The brake is disengaged simply by applying 70N reverse actuation then re-energising the solenoid.

Copley Controls' ServoTube brake completes the company's linear motion offering, bolting inconspicuously to their innovative linear actuator using an adjustment-free design.

The elegant, compact design makes the ServoTube brake reliable and cost effective.

The ServoTube brake is available immediately for the ServoTube 25, Copley Controls also supply a range of slot-in braking resistors for the Xenus drive.
