Controllers hold key to speedy actuation

A Copley Controls product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 25, 2006

Powerful new linear actuator delivers extra-fast camming in combination with a high bandwidth amplifier as an alternative to belt-drives and ballscrews.

Copley Controls' Xenus controllers feature a powerful camming mode.

The controllers are ideally matched with Copley's high force, direct drive ServoTube actuators and linear motors to translate cam lookup tables into fast-executing linear motion.

The ServoTube linear actuator's fast dynamic response has lead to significant interest from packaging OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), for cutting paper and plastic materials.

Eliminating pause from a sequence dramatically increases performance over a production run.

The continuous flow of material is achieved by cutting materials on-the-fly.

A knife carriage accelerates from rest to full paper or film speed, travels in synchronisation with the material, then shears the sheet.

The blade and carriage then retract immediately in preparation for the next sheet.

The ServoTube has the unique combination of a highly dynamic response and rugged IP67 actuation required for packaging machinery.

Another trend is in the beverage industry.

Automated production lines such as bottle filling and capping lines have traditionally depended on mechanical cams and gears to execute placing, filling and others precisely synchronised processes.

Next generation manufacturing lines exploit electronic cams to provide the same degree of synchronisation and speed of operation with the added flexibility of adjustable height and timing.

Historically, batch changes have required machinery shut down to mount new cams which would incur downtime.

An electronic cam is adjusted instantly, using a control network such as the Xenus' CANOpen facility all drives are adjusted from a single master.

Consumer driven trends in food and drink demand flexible production and shorter batches, electronic camming is boosting productivity and enabling packagers to follow trends from changing label size through to varying bottle volumes.

ServoTube and Xenus versatility improve productivity in packaging, food and beverage, material handling, medical, warehouse and other automation systems.
