Automotive steel expertise is moving to Warwick
Corus Automotive is relocating to Warwick Manufacturing Group to continue its development of innovative vehicle engineering.
Corus Automotive, which specialises in developing innovative vehicle engineering solutions using the latest thinking in materials and manufacturing technologies, is relocating to Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) on the campus of Warwick University.
The team, headed by Professor Jon King, has a staff of 30 vehicle engineers providing cost-effective lightweight solutions to automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers.
The team has already pioneered several automotive innovations, such as F2C - a technique for rapid design optimisation to achieve best material utilisation in crash structures by including formed material properties.
Others include the use of advanced high-strength steels in hydroformed chassis parts for Lancia Thesis, and the advanced high-speed crash analysis needed to enable Corus bridge parapet crash barriers to meet the new EN1317 standard for 2004.
Commenting on the Corus rationale for the move, Professor King said, "We must continuously innovate in our technology programmes to meet the challenge of our customers' cost and performance goals.
"Increasing collaboration with Universities and technical institutions is one of the ways we can achieve this.
"WMG has an excellent global reputation for application of new technologies in the automotive industry and we are pleased to have the opportunity to co-locate with them.
"Whilst we continue to operate independently, we can explore ways to collaborate in areas of automotive R and D for new materials applications and processing technologies.
"As an example, topics like multi-metal joining and demonstrating the benefits of using advanced high strength steels (AHSS) in automotive body structures are on the table for discussion at the moment through WMG's International Automotive Research Centre (IARC) programme".
Professor Sir Kumar Bhattacharyya, director of WMG said: "We are especially looking forward to working with Corus.
"This will increase the range of ways that the International Automotive Research Centre can contribute to improved competitiveness in the automotive industry through the deployment of smarter technologies and working methods".
