Corus is to supply Stadco, one of Europe's leading automotive body-in-white specialists, with a wide range of cut and pressed panel blanks.
The ability to supply consistent, high quality material and meet stringent service and delivery goals has secured a major contract for Corus to supply Stadco, one of Europe's leading automotive body-in-white specialists, with a wide range of cut and pressed panel blanks.
The significant contract will see Corus' Automotive Service Centre in Wednesfield, West Midlands, supply the full-finish blanks direct to the state-of-the-art Stadco Birmingham site, the largest independent press facility in the UK, where they will be used to press over thirty different parts for LDV's all-new Maxus range of light commercial vehicles.
Launched in the UK in January 2005, the LDV Maxus is a class leading range of light commercial vehicles, which is set to compete with the best in the business.
Commenting on awarding the contract to Corus, Dinos Andreou, Stadco Commercial Operations Manager, UK said: "We have worked closely with Corus for many years and have come to recognise their ability to deliver high quality full-finish blanks on time, every time".
"The consistency in the quality of the blanks Corus delivers helps us to produce the high quality panel finish demanded by LDV".
"We are now ramping up production in order to meet LDV's manufacturing schedules and are confident that Corus will continue to meet our supply requirements".
Alan Hutchinson, General Manager, Corus Automotive Service Centre said: "We are delighted to have secured the contract to supply Stadco and LDV".
"The automotive industry has very exacting demands and as such we have worked hard and invested significantly at our world-leading Automotive Service Centre to ensure we continue to improve the consistency of the material we supply, achieve low parts per million rejection rates and ultimately improve the quality of service we offer to our customers".
The Automotive Service Centre is not the only Corus business that has supported the launch of LDV's all-new Maxus range.
Materials and vehicle engineering expertise from Corus Strip Products UK during the development stages of the Maxus range has helped to deliver weight and cost benefits to the Birmingham based manufacturer.
Corus Strip Products UK undertook a number of studies in 2004 to assist LDV in identifying weight reduction and vehicle assembly improvements prior to the vehicle's launch.
Uniquely, Corus was able to offer LDV the support of its Automotive Engineering Group based in Coventry, which specialises in developing innovative vehicle engineering solutions using the latest thinking in materials and manufacturing technologies.
The focus for Corus' support included a material selection study to optimise the use of Galvatite hot-dip galvanised steels throughout the body structure.
This allowed LDV to use the most cost-effective steel solutions whilst guaranteeing a high exterior surface finish and superior corrosion performance.
In addition, Corus undertook gauge optimisation studies to help identify weight-saving opportunities whilst maintaining the vehicle's body stiffness and performance characteristics.
The studies resulted in a 15kg per vehicle weight saving while maintaining the robust body and chassis structural targets for Maxus.
This was no easy task as Maxus is 20% stiffer than the company's existing Convoy range.
