Chartered Engineer is a rare breed

A Corus Automotive product story

Female engineers are a rare breed in themselves, but Cardiff-based Project Engineer Clair Petheram has distinguished herself even further by earning Chartered Engineer status.

Female engineers are a rare breed in themselves, but Cardiff-based Project Engineer Clair Petheram has distinguished herself even further by earning Chartered Engineer status.

Petheram (age 29 and from Caerphilly) works for Corus Europressings based on the Wentloog Corporate Park and has been awarded Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE) full Member status and registration with the Engineering Council UK as a Chartered Engineer for achieving stringent standards in academic formation, professional development and experience, plus commitment to the engineering profession.

Her Business Development Manager, Helen Raven, says: "IMechE has 35,502 chartered members in the UK, but only 872 of these are female - which is less than 2.5%".

"This figure truly puts into perspective what Clair has achieved and how highly she can be regarded within the engineering fraternity".

Petheram says: "It's a dream come true, as this is something I've always aimed for ever since graduating from Cardiff University eight years ago".

"It's a highly recognised qualification in what is a very competitive marketplace".

"The process involved hands-on training and practical work experience, while I also had to compile a detailed report and undertake a tough interview process, but it's all been worthwhile and very stimulating".

"I'm sure it will raise my profile both within Corus and the engineering sectors we operate in".

Petheram joined Corus Europressings straight from university in 1997 as part of a graduate training scheme and was responsible for the implementation of a new automatic visual inspection system for their production lines.

She was then taken on as a Project Engineer two years later and her duties include plant movement and relocation, the introduction of quality and environment management systems, plus information technology overviews.

More recently, she has taken on some commercial responsibility and now oversees the introduction of new products to the Europressings portfolio.
