TVR Engineering Limited is using miniature stepper motors from Crouzet in the heating system controls on its latest sports car, the Tuscan Speed Six.

Crouzet have been supplying specially modified DC motors for a similar application on TVR's Griffith 500 since its launch in 1993 and TVR came to Crouzet again to discuss the system for their new car.

Many cars have the heater controls fitted under the dashboard close to the flaps which move to direct airflow to the correct part of the cabin.

TVR's own 360bhp, straight six engine fitted to the Tuscan means that under-bonnet space is at a premium so the heating system controls found a home inside the front wing.

Paul Harrop, Development Engineer at TVR designed a new digitally controlled heating system that supplies all the creature comforts expected in the Tuscan cabin while reducing the complexity of the control system.

Crouzet worked with Paul in selecting the right stepper motor to achieve his aims and several options were tested to find exactly the right one for the job.

Paul finally opted for a higher torque motor with lower ratio gearing to achieve the combination of high power and low noise levels needed.

"I prefer to over-engineer everything a bit for reliability" says Paul.

Weight is also a factor in the choice of the miniature motor as, in spite of the Tuscan's sophistication it weighs in at around 1,000kg overall.
