When any imperfection in material can affect the integrity of a welded seam, sheared edge condition is a critical factor.

A service offered by stainless steel and aluminium processor Cashmores, delivers "shear perfection" to ease the welding process and considerably reduce scrap and rework.

As part of its first-stage manufacturing service, Cashmores can supply blanks cut to customers' precise specifications ready for welding.

Says marketing manager Cyril Sparrow: "A typical application is flue manufacture.

One option is to produce a lock seam, but aesthetically this is less pleasing.

A welded seam considerably improves appearance, but the quality of the sheared edge is critical to the weld.

We have worked closely with customers to develop the ability to deliver blanks cut with the minimum of edge burring to enable a clean weld to be achieved".

Customer trials, carried out using 0.4mm thick grade 304 stainless steel, have confirmed the quality of sheared edge achieved - one engineer commented that the sheared edge condition on the material supplied was "the best that I have seen for a long time".

Blanking is one of a number of first-stage manufacturing processing options offered by Cashmores designed to reduce processing costs for customers.

Inline processes also allow panels to be notched or pierced as they are cut to size.

From its Walsall facilities, Cashmores also offers a complete range of cut-to-length, slitting, coil and sheet polishing, spool winding and plastic coating for both stainless steel and aluminium.
