Coolant keeps machining at high speeds
In the competitive world of subcontract manufacturing every product and every supplier comes under the microscope that is used to drive costs out of the business.
Castrol spokesman Simon Taylor said the contract was won with a combination of products including a multi-pack soluble metalworking fluid and a compatible range of associated fluids that eliminate the process of continuous contamination.
All metalworking fluids are susceptible to water evaporation and contamination from other machine fluids, which can affect their performance.
The way to counter this with a conventional fluid is to change the concentration or introduce quantities of additives.
Castrol's EM400 multi-pack product is a two-component soluble oil - complete with a package of additives - that can be managed tankside in the machine shop.
The individual components are mixed in the tank, letting the formula be adjusted hour-by-hour to maintain performance.
This ensures working conditions for the machining process at all times and reduces fluid wastage.
The compatible associated machine fluids include hydraulic oils, slideway oils, spindle oils, neat oils and cleaners.
They eliminate contamination and let the metalworking fluid be recycled and mixed back into the system.
With 13 central systems from 11,000 to 112,000-litre capacity, Castrol estimates that the combination of reduction in product use and an associated reduction in waste will save Ford £500,000 a year on the DVM-4 lines at Dagenham.
