Cutler-Hammer has announced a major new order from Western Power Distribution (WPD), formerly SWEB, for a complete packaged sub-station solution at the Prince Rock site in Plymouth

Cutler-Hammer has announced a major new order from Western Power Distribution (WPD), formerly SWEB, for a complete packaged sub-station solution.

The sub-station will be installed at the Prince Rock site in Plymouth, replacing older equipment to provide a continuous power supply for over 3,000 domestic and business customers in the area.

Containerised to provide lower costs and reduced on-site installation time, the sub-station is designed to fit a space just 12.5m long x 4.8m wide.

The sub-station comprises 14 panels of Cutler-Hammer's 11kV switchboard with a 14MVA capacity and will enable the electricity board to provide continuous power to customers throughout the change-over from the existing 35-year-old sub-station this summer.

The Cutler-Hammer complete packaged sub-station is designed to be self-sufficient with built in fire alarms, smoke detectors and intruder alarms.

Andy Benjamin, Projects Engineer, Western Power Distribution, said: "The nature of the project led us down the route of a self-contained substation.

The floor in the existing building is actually subsiding so a solution was needed fast and, of the suppliers asked to quote, Cutler-Hammer met our full requirements.

They produced a complete packaged sub-station, small enough to fit into the limited space behind the old building - space is very tight at this particular site!" Fitting more components into the same or less space is becoming a major issue for designers.

Cutler-Hammer is a leading producer of reduced-size components, enabling significantly smaller end-products with no reduction on ratings.

About Western Power Distribution; Western Power Distribution was formed in 1999 after South Western Electricity plc's supply business was bought by London Electricity along with the trade name SWEB.

The company has 1650 employees and supplies over 1.3 million domestic and business customers in the South West.
