Sun Smart and Skin Safe 2006 Campaign 2006

A Communication Workers Union product story

The CWU, which has the majority of its quarter of a million workers employed outdoors, has stepped up its 'Sun Smart and Skin Safe' Campaign 2006.

Having issued detailed information to its national network of Royal Mail and British Telecom Safety Representatives, the CWU, which has the majority of its quarter of a million workers employed outdoors, has stepped up its 'Sun Smart and Skin Safe' Campaign 2006.

Thousands of pocket-sized 'CWU Sun Smart and Skin Safe' fact cards have been distributed to postal delivery staff and BT engineers through the Union's 170 nation wide Branches.

CWU National Health and Safety Officer Dave Joyce said "These cards are aimed at reaching all our outdoor working members and are a crucial part of our Union's campaign to raise the awareness of our members to the now very serious and growing risk of skin cancer caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight".

The Union has consulted a number of international health organisations who have said that sun exposure is the main cause of skin cancers.

UV radiation from the sun damages DNA, which leads to the development of cancer.

Dave added "We have to dispel the myth that a nice sun tan is a sign of health because it's NOT! - In fact far from being a sign of health, the experts have told us that a sun tan is a reaction to DNA damage in the skin".

"It is a sign that the body is trying to repair damage that has already happened".

"The experts also say that sun tans offer little or no protection from the suns harmful UV rays." Cancer Research UK, the Department of Health and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have issued warnings of the enormous risk of skin cancer to those working outdoors in the intense sunlight and that applies to the majority of CWU members.

CWU Branches have been told they can order additional stocks of the 'Sun Smart and Skin Safe' fact cards from the CWU's Health, Safety and Environment Department or download them from the Union's web site.
