Alarm management software cuts out nuisance

A Control-See Software Solutions product story

U.C.ME-OPC version 5.5 introduces new functionality that is helping customers to eliminate nuisance alarms.

Control-See Software Solutions announces the immediate availability of U.C.ME-OPC version 5.5.

Too often, alarm system effectiveness is undermined by poorly configured alarms, static alarm settings that can't adapt to dynamic plant conditions, and a host of other nuisance alarms, resulting in alarm floods that overwhelm operators just when they need to focus on potentially serious problems.

As a result, operators and engineers in the process control industry have become increasingly aware of the value that alarm management solutions offer.

U.C.ME-OPC version 5.5 introduces new functionality that is helping customers to eliminate nuisance alarms.

This is done by adding two important properties to each alarm: alarm timeout (in seconds) and an alarm inhibit tag.

Once the alarm is detected, U.C.ME-OPC waits for a period of time defined by the customer.

Only if the alarm is still active after the timeout has ended, will it be created and the recipients notified.

In addition, each alarm may be inhibited by an inhibit tag.

When the tag value is nonzero, the alarm will be inhibited.

This functionality is extremely useful when operators and engineers know in advance that a unit or a section in their plant is going down for maintenance and they want to avoid false alarms coming from this unit/section.

Text messaging (SMS) using standard analogue modems and TAP protocol U.C.ME-OPC version 5.5 introduces a new way of sending text messages (SMS) to cellular phones.

Using a standard analogue data modem and a telephone landline, U.C.ME-OPC may send alarm messages to cellular phones.
