3DConnexion has appointed educational reseller Journey Education to market its 3D motion controllers to students, faculties and academic institutions across the UK The products are available online from journeyed.co.uk at discounted prices for education

The motion controllers include the Spacepilot, Spaceball, Spacemouse and Spacetraveler.

The controllers are used by over 350,000 design professionals at manufacturing, design and DCC companies worldwide and have become standard on many engineering and product design courses.

The controllers let designers using 3D design software deploy a two-handed work style, where the motion controller takes over the navigation functions - pan, zoom and rotate - which can account for as much as half of mouse movements.

There is no need to switch modes because the other hand on the mouse is free for editing.

Working simultaneously with both hands and reducing the number of mouse movements helps complete projects faster and with greater comfort.

The controllers support over 120 design and analysis applications including CADCAM applications.

The devices also support digital content creation and animation applications including 3DS Max, Cinema 4D, Bodypaint 3D, Maya, Motionbuilder, Softimage|XSI and Photoshop.

John Reinhardt, Managing Director of Journey Education, said: "CAD, engineering and animation students that make this small investment in the tools of their profession have an advantage when it comes to future employment".

"There are also advantages for the institutions that use the technology in their labs as these attract the business funds set aside for R and D".
