Software provides complete CADCAM
solution

GTI Corporation has selected a combination of design and manufacturing software to provide a complete solution to the CADCAM requirements.

Specialist tooling provider and automotive seal manufacturer GTI Corporation has selected a combination of Delcam's design and manufacturing software to provide a complete solution to the CADCAM requirements Based at Houghton Regis near Dunstable, UK, GTI's technical competence in rubber moulding and extrusion technologies provides a complete service in design and manufacture of tooling and components, specialising in automotive sealing systems

With a unique market position and a customer list for tooling or manufacture that includes 21 of the world's quality and performance car makers, Technical Director Chris Couch knows that the company must provide state-of-the-art service to meet exacting requirements.

"Our customers are particularly demanding in terms of technical complexity, the need for programme flexibility and very high quality standards within rigorous timescales", said Couch.

"We have to challenge our equipment suppliers".

"We looked at everything from the largest CADCAM system suppliers to the smaller specialist CAM developers", remembered Couch.

"None of them was able to satisfy all our requirements so I decided to re-look at Delcam".

"I had considered Delcam some time ago, when we first invested in CADCAM, and was impressed at the quality of the machining.

I was surprised at how affordable the Delcam programs are now that they are available on PC".

Couch expects productivity improvements at all stages of GTI's full service to its customers.

"The first improvement will be in data transfer, which was complex and time-consuming in our previous system", he said.

"This is an essential part of our integrated delivery process because we often develop complete sealing system designs from the panel data sent by our customers".

"We should reduce our design times, for both tooling and components, by 20 to 30%", predicted Couch.

"In addition, PowerShape will allow us to undertake very fast modifications to the geometry if the panel, component or tool designs change during a development programme".

Electrode design is expected to see even greater improvements.

With a typical mould, almost 50% of the design and manufacturing time is spent on EDM work to add fine detail and to produce small radii in deep cavities.

Currently, each electrode takes between 30 and 90min to design, depending on complexity.

Couch expects to reduce this by approximately two thirds by using PS-Electrode and PowerShape.

With these improvements in efficiency, GTI Corp is planning to boost its specialist seal business and its tool manufacturing division for companies producing higher volume components, throughout Europe and the UK.

"I know our quality is already as good as anyone's", concluded Couch.

"With the addition of our Delcam software, we will be more competitive on timing and price, to the point that companies cannot afford not to use us". Request a free brochure from Delcam ...
