BAE Systems used Catia V5 for virtual product development to create the expandable diameter fastener for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme.

Dassault Systemes has revealed that BAE Systems used its Catia V5 product lifecycle management (PLM) solution for virtual product development to create the expandable diameter fastener (EDF) for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme The BAE Systems reliability and maintainability team at Samlesbury are proud to have been instrumental in introducing and developing the (EDF), now a key part of the JSF programme

Using Catia, to help with the initial modelling, the team designed and modelled a simple washer arrangement.

This washer acts initially as a spacer to aid the installation of the pin, thereby eliminating the need for additional parts, tooling and support.

It is then used as a standard washer as part of the installed attachment.
