De Montfort University (DMU) student Desmond Burns has won a top regional engineering innovation prise for his cost-cutting rapid manufacturing system.

Burns, of Scraptoft, Leicester, designed the system as part of the masters degree in rapid product development which he has just completed at DMU Leicester.

The system for making product parts straight from machines without the need for tooling has already been used at Glenborough Engineering and the Lear Corporation, the world's leading automotive interior systems supplier.

The prestigious East Midlands Professional Engineering Institutions (EMPEI) Masters Prise recognises technical innovations which contribute to the future prosperity of the region and to win it Burns beat competition from six other universities.

Judges declared Burns' project, which was conducted in collaboration with Leicester-based Glenborough Engineering where he works, had the potential to "change the future".

Barry Stickings, Chairman of East Midlands Science, Innovation and Industry Council, commented: "It has great potential to make a major impact on the world of industry".

Prof David Wimpenny, Head of Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing at DMU, said: "Our unique MSc in rapid product development fosters innovation by providing designers and engineers with knowledge of the latest product design tools and techniques".

"Desmond Burns is an outstanding student who was awarded an MSc with distinction for his highly innovative work".

"The new system developed by Desmond offers the potential to produced plastic parts of all most unlimited complexity without the need for any tooling and could revolutionise manufacturing in the UK", added Prof Wimpenny.

Burns, who won a trophy and GBP 500, said: "It was a great honour to be chosen to represent De Montfort University for the Master's prize.

To actually take the overall trophy was very satisfying as the quality of the competing projects from other students, the majority of whom were studying for PhDs, was so high".

"Awards that acknowledge innovative research within universities are an excellent way of obtaining greater industry awareness".

"After the presentation I was approached by several industrialists in the audience for more information on the capabilities of my new rapid manufacturing process".

"The MSc in rapid product development has given me a whole range of practical and academic skills that will help develop my future career prospects", said Burns.
