Universities must increasingly join forces with industry to advance the knowledge economy, according to the head of one of the Government's leading funding agencies who will give a public lecture at De Montfort University this week.

Professor John O'Reilly, Chief Executive of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, will give his talk "Get SET for the knowledge economy" on Wednesday 1st June at 1730 BST at De Montfort University Leicester.

Prof O'Reilly who is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Scientist, said: "In the transition from the 'industrial age' to the 'knowledge age' advances in science, engineering and technology (SET) together with people skilled in these areas have never been more crucial to success".

His presentation will showcase some outstanding SET advances, emphasising how commonly these draw on interdisciplinary collaborations, and will highlight research achievements in science and engineering.

"Many companies increasingly look towards universities for 'frontier' research".

"There are some excellent examples of strategic partnerships".

"Particularly powerful are three-way partnerships wherein industry, universities and research funding agencies (such as EPSRC) secure mutually beneficial leverage from one another", said Prof O'Reilly, who is also current President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE).

This event, the latest in the University's Distinguished Lecture Series, takes place in Lecture Theatre 2.13, Clephan Building, Bonners Lane, Leicester.
