A host of top business people are attending De Montfort University (DMU) Leicester this month to find out more about its cutting edge computing, engineering and environmental research projects.

Ashley Pocock, Director of the Home Technology Programme at EDF Energy, will open the event in the university's award-winning, environmentally friendly Queens Building on Wednesday 28th June 2006.

The event will allow visitors to learn about the latest research projects being carried out by DMU's Faculty of Computing Sciences and Engineering, the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development and the Emerging Technologies Research Centre.

Business people will be able to attend presentations on a variety of topics, from robots in the Centre for Computational Intelligence to a virtual art gallery.

Delegates at the open day will include: Paul Weller, of Scotia Gas; Gordon Boot, of Siemens; Richard Wooldridge and Nigel Dowsett from Ford Motor Company; and John Aird of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

The event runs from 0945 to 1530 BST and includes lunch with an address by Sue Kirby of the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA).

Professor Philip Moore, Head of Research and Commercial Development for the Faculty of Computing Sciences and Engineering, said: "Collaboration with industrial and commercial partners, public agencies and other government bodies is a vital aspect of contemporary research in computing, science and engineering.

"This open day is an opportunity for businesses and potential partners to get a closer look at the university's excellent research expertise and capabilities in the areas of Computing, Engineering and Technology and for them to see first hand, important research findings demonstrated by our leading international researchers".

DMU has a strong track record in working with businesses, enabling them to benefit from the University's vast amount of expertise.

The University enjoys successful partnerships with companies across a wide spectrum of industries from mechatronics to digital radio, and from product design and development to continuous improvement programmes.

DMU received the highest level of funding for any university in the region from the 2004 HEIF2 awards (Higher Education Innovation Fund) partly through its collaborative work with industry.

The Research Open Day is funded by HEIF2.
