Gas analysis aided by glass to metal sealing

Deutsch, supplier of glass to metal sealing products and hermetic connectors, has joined forces with Crowborough-based Servomex, in the field of gas analysis.
Gas analysis is essential in a variety of plant manufacturing processes where quality of the product and plant safety are crucial.
Glass to metal sealing is key where this analysis is undertaken to ensure contamination of the gas does not occur.
Deutsch Ltd, based in St Leonards, East Sussex, has been producing glass to metal seals in the UK for over 30 years.
The seals are suitable for applications in the medical field, defence, aerospace, and any application where temperature, pressure and environmental considerations render standard connectors unusable.
The design and manufacture of the seals is carried out in-house using the latest technology and high levels of inspection control and testing.
"We don't consider that Deutsch is just a supplier," says Neil Hollis, Production Engineer at Servomex.
"They work in partnership with us.
They provide us with finished solutions.
The necessary products are bought in for our specific needs, and Deutsch produces our sub-assemblies.
They will produce samples, hold stock for us, and overall provide a one stop shop." During gas analysis a transducer measures the oxygen content of the gas that passes through it.
Oxygen contains corrosive toxins, making the need for glass to metal seals vital.
Servomex transducers are suitable for use in many medical and industrial applications.
In the medical field, transducers are used in fast response for breath-by-breath oxygen and carbon dioxide measurement.
The extremely fast response time means that symptoms such as hypoxia are detected at very early stages, and their long life and durability are ideal for use in metabolic studies, critical care ventilators and neo-natal incubators.
Deutsch's range of hermetic seals can be designed in a wide variety of shapes and sizes such as square flange, jam nut, solder and weld mount.
Maximum dimensions offered by Deutsch are 100x150mm, dependant on the axis of the hermetic seal.
An even distribution around the glass seal results in the even distribution of compression on the glass seal.
With operating temperatures ranging from -65 to 260C, Deutsch's hermetic seals are offered with two styles of compression.
The first is a continuous glass preform sealing all pins, and the second is individual glass bead preforms sealing each pin individually in a perforated steel web, for example in a relay base.
Insulation resistance of Deutsch's seals is not less than 5000 megohms at 500VDC pin to pin or pin to shell.
Voltage proof is specified at 2000VDC with the leakage rate less than 5 microamps without flashover or breakdown.
During pressure testing, hermetic connectors are normally rated at 1000psi minimum.
Deutsch offers the opportunity of higher pressure testing up to 4000psi, carried out in-house, and using water as a transfer medium.
Special testing can be applied to small diameter seals that may be suitable for pressure in excess of 25000psi.
