Television Systems uses the customisable Digi Connect ME embedded networking solution to network-enable intelligent mains power distribution units for the BBC Broadcast Centre in London.

Television Systems (TSL) uses the customisable Digi Connect ME embedded networking solution to network-enable intelligent mains power distribution units for the BBC Broadcast Centre in London.

The Digi Connect ME allowed TSL to create a remote management function via Ethernet for nearly 800 mains power distribution units for the BBC.

"Because broadcast equipment is often located at unmanned, out-of-the-way locations, remote device management is extremely important", said Tim Whittaker, Director of Engineering, TSL.

"Networked mains power distribution units allow broadcasters to power and monitor their remote broadcasting equipment more easily".

Based on the 32bit NetSilicon NS7520 microprocessor, the Digi Connect ME offers a high level of functionality in a cost effective and ultracompact form factor.

TSL used the Digi Connect ME embedded module with complete, plug-and-play firmware and integration kit to ensure rapid incorporation of the Digi Connect ME into their design and fast time to market.

"We chose the Digi Connect ME because it offered all the features we needed to quickly and cost effectively develop an intelligent, network-enabled mains power distribution unit", Whittaker added.

"The ease of use of the Digi Connect ME and integration kit left us free to concentrate our efforts on developing the functionality of the device".

The Digi Connect ME integration kit allowed TSL to create an easy-to-use web interface for monitoring and controlling devices connected to the power block.

The company was also able to quickly and easily develop its own management information base extension specifically for use with BBC Technology's control system.

In addition to the units required for the Broadcast Centre, TSL expects to use the new mains distribution units for remote connection and control of equipment in a wide range of unmanned sites owned by satellite and cable TV operators.

"TSL is one of the first companies to realise the rapid hardware and software integration advantages of the Digi Connect ME solution", said Joel Young, Vice President of Engineering, Digi International.

"This is an excellent example of how the Digi Connect ME can be used to quickly and cost effectively develop products with the added value of intelligent, network-ready capabilities for secure and easy-to-use web-based remote configuration and control".
