UK troops are to benefit from what is claimed to be the most advanced and effective respirator in the world to protect them from chemical and biological warfare agents.

UK troops are to benefit from what is claimed to be the most advanced and effective respirator in the world, the General Service Respirator (GSR), to protect them from chemical and biological warfare agents Scott Health and Safety have been awarded the £40m contract for the development and manufacture of the GSR

Design Reality Limited, a design consultancy from North Wales, has been working with Scott Health and Safety on the 14-month assessment phase as the consulting design team throughout its involvement with the GSR project.

The respirator uses new technologies in the air filter and seal system developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) under an MOD sponsored research programme that also involved Design Reality.

Rob Sutton, Projects Leader for Scott Health and Safety, said: "Design Reality have been creative, enthusiastic and dedicated throughout our project, seamlessly working with our team and proving to be a great investment." After the contract had been signed, Lord Bach, Minister for Defence Procurement said: "This new respirator is no mere gas mask.

It will give our troops an unparalleled level of protection from all manner of threats - from biological and chemical weaponry to industrial chemicals and other hazardous airborne materials.

This project is a good example of an innovative UK scientific and industrial base working with agencies of the MOD to develop world-beating equipment.the new GSR will be an improvement in every respect on anything else available in the world." Design Reality director Troy Baker said: "We are proud to make a difference, by using our design skills to work on a project that truly benefits the lives of others.
